“Guys…I’m joining the Marines.” Short, sweet, and to the point. That’s how Josh likes to keep it, and that’s how he told us. Twenty-three years old, college graduate, steady job as a school teacher…and yet unsatisfied. Shane and I knew for a while that he wanted to join, but Mama always had a carrot stick to keep him at bay, terrified her child would end up in a volatile place on the other side of the world. Yet carrots get boring and what Josh wanted money couldn’t buy.
Fast forward to the summer of 2007. That afternoon in the gymnasium, this was it! We finally got to see our brother after three months of sending letters. These recruits, men reborn, now proudly wearing their enlisted service uniforms tucked and buttoned to regulation were introduced to us as Marines. Like fireworks, their caps shot up in the air, and then fell like rain. And there he was…twenty five pounds slimmer, a fit to fight grunt, with a strange sense of inner peace – mission accomplished.
Josh shared his stories with us from boot camp, gave us a tour of the training facility, and filled us in on Marine Corps history from its inception in 1775 to the Devil Dogs. You could see the enthusiasm in his eyes, hear the excitement in his voice as he spat out a number of new acronyms and terms, and yet his movement was tamed and controlled by months of training. And before you know it, he was gone again…off to Iraq. Three brothers, close in age, rarely spending more than a month or two apart from one another, and one had to say goodbye for over half a year. Duty bound to go be what he trained to be…the Devil’s Matchmaker.
The above is what embodies our apparel. Our shirts carry the history of the Marine Corps and its vicious reputation on the battlefield. All combined in a chaotic order personifying the USMC spirit with cutting edge art and subtle messages. A savage style created with love. We, three brothers, made this for you.
